CAPTCHA

Well the reason for this blog is that I just recently installed Thunderbird to keep better management of my university email account.  The amount of emails that come in is crazy and I need to easily drag, drop, and search for emails.  Plus I've been meaning to use a RSS aggregator ever since the Michael Stephens presentation I attended back in November and Thunderbird provides this feature along with the email.  At any rate, I got it working today and started cleaning my inbox since the new semester started.  It exploded to about 600 emails this past semester and I wanted to clean it up to at most 200 or less.  Came across some old emails that I always meant to get back to and found this link [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7023627.stm] about Carnegie-Mellon's digitizing project of old books.  This may be an old article but it was still pretty interesting.  For anybody that's ever use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, you know how bad it gets if you're OCRing old documents.  The ink has spread and is readable but doesn't look like its original thin and clean printed letter.  So Carnegie-Mellon has a problem they need to manually have someone look at all the OCR files to decipher each word, which can get pretty boring and extend a project longer.  The cost to pay that guy to read and decipher isn't cheap either.  What they're doing instead is taking images of these words and using as CAPTCHAs, the same stuff that blocks bots and spammers when you're submitting information.  So smart of these guys, its like free work and also serves as a spam blocker for another application at the same time.  It does make me wonder though, cutting out the image, double checking that its correct.. that still takes some man hours.  I wonder if its more cost effective.  If there's a hard to decipher one, they submit it to be used again for reconfirmation.  So unless they're cutting out the words with the computer somehow... I wonder how much better this is.

Tagged - My Goals

It's 2:30AM Sunday May 17, 2007 and I'm finally getting around to responding to being tagged by Wendy.  I wasn't sure how I was going to do this when I first got tagged.  I have too many goals I wish to achieve so I'm doing a brain dump and just post down the ones that are on my mind right now.  Figured this was also a good way to muse over these goals and see what I have to work on.

1. Finish making the Building a Rainbow Greenstone digital library by summer's end - I'm hitting some roadblocks at the moment understanding how this software works and its making me wonder if I'll finish this project.

2. Graduate with an mLISc degree and find a stable job - I should be graduating by the end of 2008 if all goes according to plan and I'm hoping things will stabilize financially within a year.  Once this part is done I can concentrate on other minor life goals.

3. Learn the guitar - I have two electric guitars, I started self learning it a year ago but got distracted.  Its time to pick it back up and get going.  On a side note, after I accomplish this, its time to finally finish learning the piano.  Something mom started me on when I was a kid but I was never able to finish.  This may yet be a lifelong goal to achieve.

4. Organize my electronic media(s) - Consolidating CDs/DVDs and moving data around into neat little piles so I can find things easily.  This is an ongoing project that I should sit down and concentrate on.  I've tried before by doing little things here and there, especially when a hard drive fails or I do one of my OS purges.  Its about time for some upgrades and purges so this time I'll just do it all.  I bet most of my floppies have corrupted data.  I just hope my CDs are still good.

5. Read like how I used to - which just means to read more.  I haven't been reading much since I went back to school because I need all the time I can get to absorb the dry textbooks.  Before I went back to school, I did a big order of books from the Science Fiction Book Club which still reside on my bookshelf, untouched, unread, and very sad.  I need to catch up on other series as well.

6. Save - just cause its a really good idea in general.  Use the money to buy a house/apartment in the future and also to fund trips.  New York, Australia, Italy, Alaskan Cruise, and revisiting Vegas are on the menu already with friends.  And I plan on visiting some old friends in SF later on so cash will be put to good use.

I'm gonna stop at 6, I have too many goals to list but these are some that are presently on my mind at this point in time.

And to continue the chain-letter tagging, I'm tagging GotLeon, smileygurl9, and mixedasia.
